Chennai, formerly known as Madras is located in the south of India.
The city has a lot to offer in terms of beaches, churches and food and a
great south Indian cultural heritage. Located along the 15km stretch of
the Coromandel Coast the city exhibits a unique combination of the
influence of the ancient British Raj and its original South Indian
culture. As far as history is concerned, like many other coasts in
India, Chennai also served as a major trading center for the East India
company.
While on a tour to South India-Chennai, what you can grab a sight of is the Anna Zoological park where you can go in for a safari and get a view of the mammals, reptiles and birds. Pulicat in Chennai is also a famous picnic spot with a lake. Also, you can take a glimpse of the Dutch cemetery to get a peep into the history of Chennai. Amongst the beaches the one you should definitely get to to is the Marina beach – walk along one of the longest beaches in the world and indulge in muruku and sundal, the famous eateries at the beach to enrich yourself with this exotic experience. The elliot beach is just down south Marina and is a popular night hang out for the youngsters in the city.Chennai has some beautiful churches like San Thome Basilica at the south end of the marina beach. It was constructed in the memory of St. Thomas Mount who is beleved to have been murdered in 78 AD, the church was created by the portuguese in the 16th century.It gets it’s beauty from the beautiful stained glass windows.The St Mary’s church at Fort St.George is also a piece of architecture made out of old tombstones.
If you are an urban bird then Fishermen's cove, teppan (japanese cuisine) and some chettinad food should not be missed at all!
The cuisine here is best experinced when you are served food on a
banana leaf.It is believed here that the leaf absorbs all the toxins
from the food served. The city has a good range of foods to offer in veg
and non veg category. One gets a variety of traditional idlis, vadas,
uttapam and if you are non veg lover you can relish on the fish which
available in plenty in this coastal city.
Given all of the above, the city is also a metro in today’s India and has great connectivity so gear up and get there!!!
